When the Canton Fair pulled the curtains down on its 115th session, the tally of deals confirmed what organisers had feared – China’s exports are continuing to face economic headwinds.
Organisers had warned that exports are facing fiercer international competition – particularly as wages rise rapidly in China. But buyers in Guangzhou said the show – which has been held twice a year since 1957, acting as a barometer for the health of Chinese trade – was also coming under pressure from another angle: ecommerce.
